What are the procedures in naming a private road?

In naming roads, the Road Naming Committee reviews all road name choices with alternate names submitted by the property owners and uses the following criteria in their recommendation:

  • Street names that are the most popular among parties provided it is not a duplicate.
  • Street names that are not difficult to pronounce or sound similar to existing roads.
  • Street names with 15 or less characters, including spaces, but not including suffixes.
  • Street names which are not duplicated.

The Road Naming Committee forwards road name recommendations to the Board of Commissioners and requests a public hearing. A public hearing notice is published 10 days prior to the hearing date in the local newspaper. The Board of Commissioners hold the public hearing and approve road names accordingly.
