J.C. Holliday Memorial Library: A Legacy of Community Dedication and Historical Resources

The J.C. Holliday Memorial Library stands as a testament to the dedication of many. In 1942, Mrs. Holliday donated a significant sum ($40,000) to build a library in memory of her husband, Jesse Claude Holliday. This generous gift was placed in trust until a suitable location and additional funding could be secured.

Years later, in 1978, Mrs. Mildred Powell generously donated the land where the library now resides. Construction finally began, funded by a combination of sources: the Holliday trust, state and local government grants, and careful investments by previous library boards. The library opened its doors in 1983, offering a spacious 9,600 square feet in downtown Clinton.

Today, the J.C. Holliday Memorial Library remains the headquarters of the Sampson County library system. It houses the administrative offices and technical processing department, ensuring smooth operations across all branches. This location boasts the largest collection of materials, catering to diverse interests. Research materials, a dedicated local history and genealogy section, audiobooks, and DVDs are all readily available.

The Garland Branch Library: A Legacy of Community Spirit

Founded in 1977 by Library Director Bill Snyder, the Garland Branch Library honors a local teacher with a passion for literacy. This teacher, who went above and beyond by lending books from her own home to students, exemplifies the community spirit that the library strives to embody.

While the smallest of the Sampson County branches, the Garland library offers a collection that punches above its weight. Packed proportionally to its larger counterparts, you'll find a curated selection of popular titles, engaging children's materials, and a range of DVDs to suit all interests.

A Longstanding Tradition: The History of Roseboro's Library

The love of reading has a deep-rooted history in Roseboro. Since 1939, the town has nurtured a library presence, adapting to the needs of the community.

Its journey began in the Roseboro Community Building, eventually expanding to a larger space on West Street. In 1968, the library found a temporary home in the Roseboro Municipal Building on Pleasant Street.

The current library building stands as a testament to community spirit. Following a fire that destroyed the First Baptist Church of Roseboro, the church generously donated the land for a dedicated library space. This permanent location opened its doors in midsummer 1989, solidifying access to books and resources for Roseboro residents.
