Renewing Your Car Registration in North Carolina: A Guide to Tag & Tax

North Carolina's Tag & Tax program simplifies car registration renewals by combining them with property tax payments into one process.

What is Tag & Tax?

Implemented in 2013, Tag & Tax is a convenient system for North Carolina residents to renew their vehicle registration and pay property taxes simultaneously. You'll receive a combined notice with both fees due in the same month each year.

How to Pay Your Combined Tag & Tax Notice:

Since 2013, county tax offices no longer accept Tag & Tax payments. Here are your options:

  • Online: Visit the NCDMV's online registration system to pay by credit or check card.
  • By Mail: Send a check or money order to the address listed on your renewal notice.
  • In Person: Locate a registration renewal office near you.

Additional Information:

  • Property Tax Year: You pay taxes for the upcoming year, covering the same period as your registration.
  • Leased Vehicles: Property taxes on leased vehicles are due at renewal. The lessee, not the leasing company, will now receive the combined notice.
  • Tax Statements: NC DMV payments aren't available on county websites. Call the NC DMV or use the provided link to print your tax receipt.
  • Refunds: No refunds are given for property taxes if you transfer your license plate during the year.
  • Military Exemption: Active duty non-residents with out-of-state residency may be exempt. Contact your county tax office for details.

By understanding Tag & Tax, you can ensure a smooth and efficient car registration renewal process in North Carolina.
